Born on the 30th of July in the year 1641, amidst the quaint environs of Schoonhoven, De Graaf emerged into a world ripe with the promise of intellectual conquests, the son of a Roman Catholic architect whose architectural endeavours paled in comparison to his son's academic pursuits.
